Adult Workshops Mudflat's workshops cover a broad range of topics for everyone from beginner to advanced students. They're a great opportunity to gather with students and clay artists from Mudflat and elsewhere to explore a variety of ceramic art, try your hand at new techniques, or meet visiting artists. General registration is November 19th at 10 am Subscriber registration is November 18 at 10 am Spring/Summer 2026 Adult Workshop Descriptions Soda Firing Learn about soda firing, an alternative to Mudflat’s regular high fire reduction and oxidation kiln firings. This workshop includes an orientation meeting that will discuss clay bodies, best forms to make, application of flashing slips, texture considerations, glaze choice and glazing tips, plus what happens in a soda kiln during the firing. Mudflat’s tech staff will wad, load, fire and unload the kiln. Limited to 10 people for each section. Students are eligible to enroll in one Soda workshop per semester but can add themselves to the waitlist for the other workshop should more space become available. Skill level: Not recommended for beginning students. Spring/Summer #1 Workshop: Orientation Wed Apr 29, 6-7 pm Firing Thursday June 11 Spring/Summer #2 Workshop: Orientation Wed June 17, 6-7 pm Firing Thursday July 30 Tuition: $250, Subscribers $200, Includes one 25-lb clay Clay + Fiber: Mixed Media Exploration with Aimee Archambault Explore how clay can be combined with fibers to create interesting sculptural and functional pieces. Aimee will introduce some basic ceramic and weaving techniques and participants will have time to create clay forms with mixed media in mind during part 1. Adding fibers and combining materials will take place during part 2. Fiber materials will be provided or participants can bring in their own found materials. We will also be learning to make our own transfers as well! Bring your leatherhard pots (any clay type works) – cylinders, bowls, plates or tiles - for transfer application. Mudflat will provide the underglaze transfers, but feel free to bring some if you have them. Part 1: Saturday May 30, 2-4 pm Part 2: Saturday June 6, 2-4 pm $200, subscribers $150 Making Better Handles with Katie Bosley Sabin In this workshop, participants will learn through observation, discussion, and practice as we work towards making better handles. We will engage with a wide range of example mugs to discuss the components that affect the look and function of a quality handle. Demonstrations will cover techniques for making pulled and slabbuilt handles, as well as tips for timing, making, and attaching. Participants should prepare their own premade-leatherhard cups in advance; then we will move through the making and attaching process with instructor guidance, finding a handle that best compliments each specific form. Join Our Team! Mudflat is looking for a qualified person to assist the Technical Directors and staff, beginning immediately. CERAMIC TECHNICAL ASSISTANT This part-time entry-level position is 20-24 hours per week. It requires working 3 days each week, 7-8 hours each day, with a regular weekly schedule, to be determined between the staff and the new hire. Responsibilities include a mix of: mixing slips and glazes, both lowfire and highfire loading and unloading electric and gas kilns firing electric and gas kilns clay recycling assist with clay deliveries assist with technical training assist with studio cleaning and maintenance Qualifications: BFA in Ceramics or comparable experience with emphasis on technical skills, strong organizational and communication skills, ability to work independently and on a team, and willingness to keep Mudflat running smoothly. Physical Requirements: The position involves physical activities including lifting up to 50 lbs., bending, and standing for extended periods. The ability to safely handle and manage fragile ceramic materials is essential. Compensation: $20.00 per hour, with paid holidays, and vacation and personal paid time off. - Technical Education Program | Mudflat
Technical Education Program A 1-year education program for hands-on ceramic technical skill building, designed for students who are interested in learning more about clays, glazes, kilns, firings, and studio maintenance. The next Tech Ed program will begin in January 2026. Applications are due: September 22nd, 2025 Open to intermediate to advanced level students, to be selected by application each year, based on interest, availability, and commitment. Prior ceramic technical experience is not required. Time commitment from students is 10 hours/week (spread over 3 days per week) for an entire year. Students must be available during daytime hours, typically between 10 am and 6 pm. Over the course of the year, the weekly schedule will change to accommodate learning different skills and tasks, and to match kiln firing schedules. Only 3-5 students will be selected for the year-long program. During the first semester students will be trained in all aspects of ceramic technical information. Topics include: Clays: clay body materials, clay recycling Slips and glazes: chemistry and mixing/maintaining Kilns: loading, firing, and unloading electric and gas kilns, as well as maintaining the shelves & kiln furniture Studio maintenance: cleaning, clay deliveries, etc. Following completion of the first semester, students will continue working independently as technical staff trainees through the following 2 semesters, with an added focus on training to fire our gas kilns. Gas kiln firings range in length from 8-9 hours for a bisque firing, to 11-13 hours for a glaze firing --students are expected to attend the entire firing. Applicants should be aware that there are physical demands involved in this work, including ability to lift/carry 50 lbs of clay or other materials. Tuition for the first semester is $800.00. Tuition for the second and third semesters is $550.00 each semester. Mudflat will provide additional shelf space and 24 hour access for all 3 semesters to participants. We will only consider applications for this program from people who are able to make a commitment for a full year, and who have flexible availability during daytime work hours. Friends of Mudflat Perks Subscription (Formerly called Membership) Enrolled students who take classes every semester and/or sign up for workshops, might be interested in purchasing a Mudflat Perks Subscription at the time of registration. The Mudflat Perks Subscription provides the following benefits: 10% discount on class tuition and intro workshops Special member discount (up to 50%) on other workshops Early registration for classes and workshops* 10% discount on purchases at Mudflat Open Studio and Sale events in May and December 10% discount on purchases at Mudflat Gallery in Porter Square, Cambridge The Mudflat Perks Subscription provides the discounts listed above but does not include studio access - you must be enrolled in a class to use the Mudflat facility. TO PURCHASE A SUBSCRIPTION: When taking new subscribers, Perks Subscriptions can only be purchased during registration periods. Registration periods begin on the first day of general registration and last for 3 weeks. We do not take Perks Subscription purchases outside of a registration period. A one year Perk Subscription is $200, and your discount can be applied immediately if registering for a class or workshop. You are not required to become a Subscriber to take classes at Mudflat. TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES: In order to register, you must create a mudflat.org online account. You can find the tutorials for creating an account and registering on our registration page . RENEWAL: When your Perks Subscription is due for renewal, you will receive an invoice from Mudflat via email, rather than renew when signing up for your class or workshop. Introductory Workshop Come try your hand at working with clay! These introductory workshops are a great way to see if you like this material. Designed for first-timers, with hands-on instruction. Finished work will be ready for pick-up about one month after the workshop. Choose from Adult Wheelthrowing Intro or Friday Night Wheel: WHEELTHROWING INTRO WORKSHOP Come try your hand at working with clay on the potter's wheel. Mudflat teacher Lisa Knebel will show you how to use the potter's wheel to make your own pots. Each student will save one pot that they make and it will be glazed and fired. This is a great way to see if you like this approach to working with clay. Each workshop meets Sundays, 1-3 pm Tuition: $75 per person FRIDAY NIGHT WHEEL Have a fun Friday night in East Somerville by trying your hands at working with clay on the potter's wheel. Our Community. Students, studio artists, faculty, staff, visiting artists, the public - all of these groups are part of the Mudflat community! Students - Classes and workshops are offered for students of all ages. Most of our students come from the 38 communities within the Greater Boston area. The majority of them are adults, ages 24 to 60, but all ages are represented, from children as young as 4 years through retirees. Studio Artists - Mudflat has 38 ceramic artists working in private or shared studios. Faculty - The 21 faculty members teaching classes and workshops represent a broad spectrum of ceramic artists and educators who bring a range of approaches and sensibilities to the educational experience at Mudflat. Staff - Our administrative, technical and gallery staff members keep our programs varied and our facility in good shape. Visiting Artists - Each semester we invite 2-3 visiting artists to present demonstrations, lectures and participatory workshops in a variety of topics and techniques. The Public - We welcome the public to Mudflat twice each year for our open studios and sales, as well as for community meetings and events, tours, exhibitions and festive galas! Mudflat Community Outreach Mudflat has a long history of special programs and outreach as an ongoing commitment to the local community and to enhance and encourage the vital, creative development of ceramic arts in the greater Boston area. Programs include but are not limited to weekly classes for Somerville Full Circle High School students, afterschool clay classes at Somerville Community School programs and field trips for local Girl Scout troops. We have also provided preschool and kindergarten field trips from area centers and schools, clay classes at Somerville senior centers, and material and technical support for clay projects and classes at local elementary schools and centers. These programs are offered at a reduced fee schedule. We also receive financial support from the Somerville Arts Council, the Somerville School Department, the Somerville Council on Aging, plus contributions from individuals and foundations and proceeds from Mudflat fundraising events. 2026 Adult students in classes and independent study are encouraged to come to Mudflat for additional studio practice time during open lab hours. Students are permitted to use all classrooms with the exception of the community classroom, which is not available for lab hour use. Meet our Faculty Aimee Archambault Aimee Achambault (she/her/hers) received her MS in Art Education from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and her BA in Visual Art and Education from Gordon College. Her sculptural work uses mixed media to explore growth, attachment and how objects carry personal and collective value. Aimee's work has been exhibited throughout the greater Boston area. She has taught art, ceramics and education in classes in community programs, public school art programs and college classes for 20 years. Noni Armony Noni Armony Erel (she/her/hers) has studied clay at Mudflat Studio and she took classes with ceramic artists in Tel Aviv, Israel. Her teaching experience includes teaching handbuilding classes to children and adults at the Jewish Community Day School in Watertown and wheelthrowing classes for adults. Noni is a Mudflat studio artist; she sells her work at Mudflat Gallery. Kyriakos Atsalis Kyriakos (Cary) Atsalis (he/him/his) received his BFA from Bates College. He sells his functional clay work at craft shows and at Mudflat Gallery. His work includes commissioned mugs for Taza Chocolate in Somerville. Cary worked as the ceramics studio manager and a teacher at Castle Hill, Truro Center for the Arts, Truro MA. Cary is a Mudflat Technical Director. Katie Bosley Sabin Katie Bosley Sabin (she/her/hers) is originally from Clearwater, Florida. She earned her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 2021 and her BFA in Ceramics from the University of Florida in 2014. Katie has been a resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana and Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and interned at Women's Studio Workshop in Rosendale, New York. She has written articles for the Journal of the National Council for Education on Ceramics Arts and Pottery Making Illustrated and has taught ceramics at community studios across the country for nearly ten years. Jennifer DeAngelis Jennifer DeAngelis (she/her/hers) received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in 2004. She crafts playful handbuilt and wheelthrown functional ware along with sculptural pieces that incorporate texture and patterns. Her work was included in the 2014 “State of Clay” exhibition. Jen is a Mudflat Technical Director. Jesse Dougherty Jessica (Jesse) Dougherty (she/her/hers) received her BFA in Studio Arts with a ceramics concentration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2021. She has completed ceramic internships at both Worcester Center for Crafts and at Mudflat. Today, Jesse teaches ceramics in the Boston area in addition to her technical work at Mudflat. Jesse's work is not defined by one process of making. Her goal is to create a sense of comfort and/or joy for both herself and others, often using animals as imagery. Gabrielle Fougere Gabrielle Fougere (she/her/hers) received her BFA in Ceramics from Massachusetts College of Art. Her claywork is handbuilt decorative boxes and one of a kind planters. She sells her work at Mudflat Gallery. Her work is included in two Lark Books: "Making and Installing Handmade Tiles" and “500 Tiles”. Gabrielle is a Mudflat Administrative Assistant. Lynn Gervens Lynn Gervens (she/her/hers) received her BFA from the University of Illinois. She has been teaching ceramics since 1977 at Mudflat, other local art centers, public school programs and preschools. Lynn is the Executive Director at Mudflat, and has also served on the boards of Studio Potter, East Somerville Main Streets, and Artisan's Asylum. Her work was included in the 2014 exhibitions “State of Clay”, "Ceramics EnMASSe", and 2015 "State of Clay: Pushing Boundaries". Leah Guerin Leah Guerin (she/her/hers) has a studio in Sutton MA, producing tiles and functional pottery. She has been a high school art teacher, receiving her Master of Art Education degree from UMass Dartmouth, as well as BFAs in ceramics and art education. Doug Hansel Doug Hansel (he/him/his) has studied ceramics at the State University of New York College at Buffalo, Worcester Center for Crafts, and Mudflat Pottery School. He has been a technical assistant for Mudflat since 1998. He enjoys making simple, wheel thrown and altered forms with porcelain. Doug sells his work locally at Artisan's Way Gallery in Concord, Five Crows Gallery in Natick, and Mudflat Gallery in Cambridge, MA. His work was included in the 2014 "State of Clay" ceramic exhibition. Felissa King Felissa King (she/her/hers) received a BFA in sculpture from Taylor University. Post college, she expanded her ceramic practice at community studios through membership prior to co-founding Yellow Door Ceramics Studio, a community studio in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 2021. Alongside teaching and studio ownership, Felissa is a working artist whose work explores the beauty and patterns of a vibrant garden through detailed painted and slip-trailed underglaze decoration on functional stoneware pieces. Lisa Knebel Lisa Knebel (she/her/hers) received her BA from Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA and has also studied at Massachusetts College of Art and the Museum School. Lisa is a Mudflat studio artist; she sells her work locally at The Cleverhand Gallery in Wellesley, Hog on Ice Gallery in Newburyport and Mudflat Gallery in Cambridge. Kate Kuligowski Kate Kuligowski (she/her/hers) has a BFA in ceramics from the State University of New York at Potsdam. Kate completed the technical education program at Mudflat and is currently a member of Mudflat's office staff. Kate's work consists of highly decorated, functional, porcelain pieces that depict animals and flowers. Kate has taught classes, workshops and afterschool programs for children and adults. David LaPierre David LaPierre (he/him/his) has been working in clay for more than 25 years. He received his BFA from the University of Connecticut. His claywork is wheelthrown, using porcelain and stoneware. David works in series of multiples of the same form while manipulating the surfaces. Kylie Marden Kylie (she/her/hers) received her BFA in Ceramics from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She works as a ceramics instructor and ceramics technician in the greater Boston area. Kylie is passionate about fostering community through making, and has led multiple empty bowls events in Boston. Her work has been shown throughout New England, including the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, The Cambridge Art Association, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Kylie works as both an illustrator and potter, creating narrative and decorative surfaces on ceramic forms. Eliane Medina Eliane (she/her/hers) received her BFA in studio art from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA in 2016. From 2017-2019, she was an assistant to Deborah Schwartzkopf at Rat City Studios in Seattle, WA and taught ceramics in the Seattle area. In 2019, Eliane moved to southern Sweden, where her mother is originally from. There, she opened a community studio offering various pottery classes and events from 2020-2022. She is now living in the Boston area and teaching ceramics at Mudflat. Eliane's work consists of wheelthrown and handbuilt functional pieces, often depicting the human form and playfully highlighting everyday objects and events. Steve Murphy Steve Murphy (he/him/his) received his BFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He apprenticed to Keiichroh Sato, potter in Nagano-ken, Japan and was a student of Japanese Tea Ceremony with Allan Sosei Palmer. He has taught ceramics at the DeCordova Museum School, The Boston Center for Adult Education and the Fuller Museum of Crafts. His work was included in the 2014 “State of Clay” exhibition and the NHIA Ceramics Biennial Exhibition 2014. Julie Peck Julie Peck (she/her/hers) received her MFA from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. She served as an apprentice at Moravian Pottery and Tileworks, Doylestown, PA and was an Artist-in-residence at ARCO, Lisbon, Portugal. She shows her lowfire tiles and functional ware locally and nationally. Her work is included in two Lark books, “500 Tiles” and “500 Vases”. Tracy Raymond Tracy Raymond (she/her/hers) has studied clay at the Harvard Ceramics Studio, Rhode Island School of Design and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Her teaching experience includes wheelthrowing classes for adults, and field trips for youth groups. Tilla Rodemann Tilla Rodemann (she/her/hers) started to work with clay in 2005. She is a Mudflat studio artist since 2014. Her work is wheel thrown, functional, elaborately decorated and has been included in a number of local and national exhibitions. Corran Shrimpton Corran Shrimpton (she/her/hers) is from Syracuse, NY and received her MFA from Georgia State University and her BFA from Alfred University. She has worked at a number of ceramic studios including The Saratoga Clay Arts Center in upstate NY, the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, FL and the Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, IL. Her work explores the restriction and contortion of women’s bodies required by our beauty-obsessed culture and prompts us to consider our expectations of femininity, their origins, and their effects. Studio Rentals Available Mudflat is now accepting applications for 2 studio rentals at Mudflat. Please read on below for information about each studio space. Please note that the Applications for the Associate Artist studio will be restricted to individuals who are currently enrolled students at Mudflat. Applications are due: November 26 Resident Artist Space Looking for one Resident Ceramic Artist, beginning January 1, 2024. Applications are due November 26, 2023. Apply here About the space: The Resident artist space is in Studio #1, a shared 186 square foot studio, in a private room with 1 other artist, on the 2nd floor off the high-fire glaze room. Rental includes 24-hour access, access to electric and gas kilns, and use of other studio and classroom equipment such as a slab roller, extruders and spray booth. Resident Artists are responsible for providing and maintaining their own shelving, tables and other equipment including pottery wheels. No kilns may be installed in studios. Rent: Monthly rent is $350.00.Rent does not include clay materials, glazes or firings, but clay, glazes and firings may be purchased through Mudflat and are additional fees. Resident artists are required to fire their own work; a training and authorization process for firing Mudflat kilns can be arranged with the Mudflat tech directors. About: Mudflat is a non-profit community clay studio and all studio artists are required to participate in Mudflat sponsored events and fundraising activities, including Mudflat’s Open Studio and Pottery Sale, held in May and December each year. All studio artists are eligible to exhibit and sell their work at Mudflat Gallery. Paid teaching opportunities are available. Mudflat provides one shelving unit for each Associate Artist and there is 1 pottery wheel and 1 common table to be shared. No kilns may be installed in studios.
