Ceramic Technical Internships Mudflat offers opportunities throughout the year for college students who are pursuing studies in ceramics to expand their knowledge of the technical side of clay with short and long term internships. Next Application deadline: April 1, 2026 Apply here About our Ceramic Technical Internships Our summer interns will be involved in all technical aspects of a working clay studio and school, including studio maintenance, clay recycling, slip and glaze mixing, loading and unloading electric and gas kilns. Electric and gas kiln firing is possible based on experience. Although interns receive unlimited studio access for claywork exploration, the internship's primary focus is not on providing instruction in building and throwing techniques. All training is provided by Mudflat’s technical staff. Hours 20 hours per week, weekdays only; daily schedule to be determined, but should be available 4 or 5 days each week for 4-5 hours each day. May/June through August/September – to be determined with intern. Minimum commitment of 8 weeks. Compensation Compensation is barter for some materials and for 24 hour access to the studio, outside of internship requirements, to independently pursue your own claywork. Includes studio access, 25 lbs of clay with glazes and firings for every 2 weeks worked, shelf storage space, and opportunity to audit a Mudflat class. Qualifications We are looking for individual(s) currently enrolled in a college level ceramic arts program, with experience working in all asepects of a clay studio. We do not accept phone or in-person registrations. Waitlist Information: Our adult classes tend to fill very quickly. If you are unable to register for your desired class, please join the waitlist using the link provided on the Adult Classes page of our website during the registration periods. When spots become available, we contact waitlisted students in order to fill openings. Please Note: We do not offer drop-in classes or studio membership options. Tuition includes 25 lbs. of clay (1 bag) with glazes and firings, but does not include personal clay tools, please see below. Students may purchase additional clay from Mudflat; students may not bring in any clays or glazes from other studios or suppliers. Tuition also includes use of the studio classrooms during open lab hours. Mudflat does offer financial aid. Please see our EBT Card to Culture Page or our Financial Aid page on the website for more info. Tuition must be paid in full to complete your registration. Clay Tools Personal clay tools are not provided for adult classes, but may be purchased at Mudflat. A basic set of five tools costs $30.00-$45.00. An assortment of clay tools are available for sale at Mudflat. These can be purchased the first day of class. Refund Policy Refund policy for all classes, independent study & affiliated: Tuition for classes is refundable minus the service & processing fees if you cancel two weeks before the semester begins. If you cancel your class after that date, tuition is non-refundable. Credits or transfers will not be issued for missed classes. Refund policy for kid/teen classes: Tuition for classes is refundable minus the service & processing fees if you cancel one week before the session begins. If you cancel your class after that date, tuition is non-refundable. Refund policy for workshops: Tuition for workshops is refundable (minus the service fee & processing fees if you cancel one week before the workshop date. If you cancel your workshop after that date, tuition may be non-refundable. Credits, refunds or transfers will not be issued for missed dates. Makeup class policy for the 14-week long semester classes Instructor-Initiated Cancellations: When an instructor must cancel a class or when Mudflat closes due to inclement weather, a formal makeup class will be scheduled for all enrolled students. Student-Initiated Absences: If a student misses a class for personal reasons, there are no formal makeup classes, class transfers, or refunds provided. Students who must miss a session are encouraged to: Notify their instructor in advance when possible Practice missed skills during designated open lab hours Pottery Pickup Storage Period: Completed pottery for classes and workshops will be held at Mudflat for up to 2 months from the completion date. After this period, unclaimed pieces may be disposed of to make room for new student work. Student Responsibility: Students are responsible for picking up their finished pieces within the 2-month window. Please don't forget to collect your creations! We love seeing the wonderful pieces you've made and want to ensure they make it home with you. Questions: If you have questions about pickup times or need to make special arrangements, please contact the office staff. Mudflat Perks Subscription Renewal When your subscription is due for renewal, you will receive an invoice via email from Mudflat, rather than renew when signing up for your class or workshop. Invoices will be sent out to members who are up for renewal on the general registration date. If you would like to renew your subscription, simply pay the invoice online. If you do not want to renew your subscription, do not pay the invoice. If you are not sure when to expect this invoice, you can see your renewal date in your online profile under "My Subscriptions". Please note: subscriptions do not auto-renew. Invoices that are not paid by the due date will result in a lapsed subscription. Financial Aid & Card to Culture When registering using these two options, you will need to put in a coupon code during checkout to receive the proper discount/payment option. Please see the financial aid or EBT Card to Culture pages for more information. Registration Service Fee When registering for a class online, you may notice the "service fee" line item. This service fee partially covers the cost of operating this electronic booking system & taking registrations online. Troubleshooting & FAQ Have something funny happen during registration or doing some homework to prepare for registration? See below! I timed out while registering? Now what? During checkout, your spot will be saved for 5 minutes while you complete your registration. If you do not complete all your registration information and payment information, you will time out of registration. If this happens you will get a notice and have to start again. I didn't receive my subscription discount when registering but I am a current subscriber. If you are not properly logged into the Mudflat.org site before you register for the class/workshop, your discount will not be applied. Make sure that you create your account using the email that you previously used to sign up for your past Mudflat subscription/classes. I didn't get a confirmation email after I registered Confirmation emails sent after registration are automated and come from our website via Kate. If you did not receive this email, please check your junk or spam folder. I'm a subscriber and I tried to register on the early registration day but got a message that I don't have access to the page. If you are a current subscriber and you receive a message that you do not have access to the page to register, check the following: It is the correct day and time of early registration You are signed into your account on Mudflat.org You are using the same email that Mudflat has on file to create your Mudflat.org account If you have checked the following and it is all correct, contact kate@mudflat.org I am away during registration, can a friend sign me up? Yes, of course! Just be sure that they enter your information when checking out/filling out the form so that we know who is attending the class. It's registration time, but I do not see any of the classes. What should I do? You may have to refresh your page when registration opens in order to see the classes. If you have refreshed and still do not see the classes, try holding down the shift key and pressing refresh. This is a great way to try to resolve an issue when the website isn't loading properly.

Artist of Color Summer Residency We are excited to invite applicants, at any career stage, to apply for a short term ceramic residency program at Mudflat Pottery School in Somerville, MA. This residency program will be offered during a flexible period within the summer months, with the timeframe to be determined by the resident based on their schedule and residency goals. Applicants will propose how they intend to use this residency program; options include, but are not limited to: Developing teaching experience in a workshop format Developing a solo show hosted Mudflat Dedicating time to creating a body of work Mudflat will provide support to candidates to structure the residency to further their artistic career and facilitating mentorship relationships within the area(s) of interest. Born in Miami, Florida, of Ecuadorian heritage, the city's lush, diverse vegetation left a lasting impression that continues to inform her studio practice. Her work explores Post-Traumatic Growth through the interplay of opposing forces—light and darkness, life and loss, growth and destruction—rooted in the belief that profound challenges can lead to transformation. Peña-Alvarez holds MFAs in Ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design and in Artisanry from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Her work is exhibited nationally, and she has held residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation, Penland School of Craft, Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, and the Hambidge Center. Call for Entries The Mudflat Cup Show!: National Call for Entry Artists are invited to submit functional cups & mugs to the 3rd annual Mudflat Cup Show! Juried by: Chandra DeBuse Exhibition Dates: March 13- April 19, 2026 Exhibition Location: Mudflat Studio, Somerville MA Submission Deadline: February 5, 2026 The submission deadline has passed. Please check back for more opportunities! ELIGIBILITY: Artists over 18 residing in the US or Canada Work(s) must be completed within the last 3 years Only original works will be accepted. Accepted works must be the same as the work that is sent. No substitutions will be accepted. Work must be functional. Cup prices should not exceed $180, and should be priced individually and not as a set. Work must be ready to be installed upon delivery if accepted. APPLY: Artists may submit up to 4 entries with 1 image per entry. SHIPPING Artists are responsible for shipping or delivery of accepted work(s) to Mudflat and are responsible for ensuring that the work(s) is packed in a safe manner to travel to and from Mudflat. Please see below for shipping guidelines. Mudflat is not responsible for pieces broken or lost in transit. No substitutions will be accepted. If artists prefer to ship in wooden crates, totes etc. the artist will be responsible for return shipping costs. Packing Materials: Use only clean, reusable packing materials such as bubble wrap, packing peanuts, foam, or other professional cushioning materials. Do not include personal items such as towels, blankets, pillows, or clothing as packing materials. Weight Limit: Individual packages must not exceed 45 pounds. Insurance: Standard shipping insurance will be provided. Artists requiring additional insurance coverage beyond the standard rate are responsible for purchasing and paying for supplemental insurance. Facility Our building at 81 Broadway in Somerville opened in August 2011. Mudflat’s $3.8 million renovation of the old Broadway Theatre into a premier clay school and studio is stunning, full of light, air, space and happy ceramic artists. This new home for Mudflat is an exciting place, with larger classrooms, improved equipment, additional artist studios, and a new space for expanded programs and community events. **Mudflat is a "barrier-free" facility.** Equipment KILNS Mudflat has three Bailey gas car kilns with electronic controls for both reduction and oxidation firing at high-fire cone 10: a 54 cubic foot; a 32 cubic foot, and an 18 cubic foot. The gas kilns can also be used for bisque firing. We recently added a 20 cubic foot soda kiln. There are five electric kilns, four with computer controls, for bisque firing, low-fire cone 04 glaze firing, and mid-range cone 6 glaze firing. SLAB ROLLER AND EXTRUDERS Equipment for use for handbuilding techniques includes one slab roller and two extruders. POTTERY WHEELS Mudflat has 36 electric pottery wheels: 24 in the main wheel classroom and 12 in the small wheel classroom. Mudflat also has one adaptive pottery wheel. Each wheel has an adjacent bench for use during throwing as well as a chair or stool in varying height. One wheel in each classroom can be positioned up on blocks for students who would prefer to throw standing rather than sitting. HANDBUILDING TABLES The handbuilding classroom has 6 canvas covered tables and an assortment of chairs and stools. Thanks to a generous donation from one of our students, we also now have 4 adjustable height tables, for sitting or standing work access. SPRAY BOOTH A ventilated spray booth is available for glaze application, with a spray gun and compressor. What We Offer Want to come to Mudflat to work in clay? Check out the different options for how you can get involved here at Mudflat! Classes Mudflat offers a variety of ongoing classes for adults, kids, and teens! Adult class semesters run three times a year, each semester consisting of 14 weeks. During these semesters, classes meet once a week for 3 hours, and enrolled students have access to open lab hours for additional practice. For those seeking a shorter commitment, Mudflat also offers 4-week pottery classes that are perfect for beginners who want to explore wheel throwing without diving into a full semester. Designed specifically for those brand new to clay, these classes cover the fundamentals of throwing, trimming, and glazing functional pieces over four weekly sessions. Additionally, Mudflat offers an August semester where students can come to learn the basics of clay during a short summer semester. Kids and teen classes run from September to June annually, with classes meeting once a week for 2 hours during 6-week sessions. Classes offered are: handbuilding for younger kids ages 5-7 and wheel throwing for kids and teens ages 8-17. Our year-long residency program has been running since 1996 and provides artists a private studio space at no cost, access to Mudflat's facilities, a monthly materials stipend, a monthly housing stipend, and opportunities to teach and sell their work. Additionally, we offer a short-term residency program each summer for artists of color. Residents can propose their use of the program, such as developing teaching experience, creating a solo show hosted by Mudflat, or dedicating time to creating a body of work. Learn more about the year-long residency Learn more about the Artist of Color residency Studio Rentals Mudflat is home to a community of 38 ceramic artists who work in private or semi-private studios, creating a diverse range of functional and sculptural pieces. In our facility, Mudflat has two types of artist categories: Resident Artists and Associate Artists. Resident Artists are professional clay artists who have the technical skill and experience to fire their own work in the studio kilns. Associate Artists are serious clay students looking for more access, privacy, and shelf space.
