  • Mudflat Perks Subscription | Mudflat

    Friends of Mudflat Perks Subscription (Formerly called Membership) Enrolled students who take classes every semester and/or sign up for workshops, might be interested in purchasing a Mudflat Perks Subscription at the time of registration. The Mudflat Perks Subscription provides the following benefits: 10% discount on class tuition and intro workshops Special member discount (up to 50%) on other workshops Early registration for classes and workshops* 10% discount on purchases at Mudflat Open Studio and Sale events in May and December The Mudflat Perks Subscription provides the discounts listed above but does not include studio access - you must be enrolled in a class to use the Mudflat facility. TO PURCHASE A SUBSCRIPTION: When taking new subscribers, Perks Subscriptions can only be purchased during registration periods. Registration periods begin on the first day of general registration and last for 3 weeks. We do not take Perks Subscription purchases outside of a registration period. A one year Perk Subscription is $200, and your discount can be applied immediately if registering for a class or workshop. You are not required to become a Subscriber to take classes at Mudflat. TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES: In order to register, you must create a mudflat.org online account. You can find the tutorials for creating an account and registering on our registration page . RENEWAL: When your Perks Subscription is due for renewal, you will receive an invoice from Mudflat via email, rather than renew when signing up for your class or workshop. When your renewal date is approaching, invoices will be sent out at the beginning of the registration period (referenced above) and be valid for 3 weeks. If you would like to renew your Mudflat Perk Subscription, pay the invoice by the listed due date. If you do not want to renew, do not pay the invoice. Please note: Perks subscriptions do not auto-renew. Not paying the issued invoice by the due date will result in the cancellation of your Mudflat Perks Subscription. CONDITIONS: Please note there is no early registration for the August semester of classes. Subscriptions are non-transferrable. One subscription per person.   • Studio Rental | Mudflat

    Studio Rental Available Associate Artist Space Looking for one Associate Ceramic Artist, beginning September 1, 2026. Applications are due July 13, 2026. Apply here There is one associate artist space available in Studio #11. This is a shared studio in a 300 square foot room, with a total of 6 artists. Rental includes 24-hour access, access to electric and gas kilns, and use of other studio and classroom equipment such as a slab roller, extruders and spray booth. Mudflat provides one shelving unit for each Associate Artist and there is 1 pottery wheel and 1 common table to be shared. No kilns may be installed in studio. Monthly rent is $265.00. Rent does not include clay, glazes or firings, but clay, glazes and firings may be purchased through Mudflat at additional cost. Associate artists are not required to fire their own work; work can be fired in Mudflat’s student kilns. Artists are eligible to enroll in a training and authorization process for firing Mudflat kilns. Mudflat is a community studio and all studio artists are required to participate in Mudflat sponsored events and fundraising activities, including Mudflat’s Open Studio and Pottery Sale, held in May and December each year. Teaching opportunities are available. Applications will be reviewed by a committee. Applicants who are already present in the Mudflat community will be given preference for Associate Artist studios. Review criteria will include applicant’s level of professionalism and quality of clay work, ability to work independently, and enthusiasm for participation in a community ceramic studio. Alongside teaching and studio ownership, Felissa is a working artist whose work explores the beauty and patterns of a vibrant garden through detailed painted and slip-trailed underglaze decoration on functional stoneware pieces. Mounting Hardware: All pieces must be equipped with a secure hanging system that utilizes a closed catch or loop (such as a wire loop, keyhole hanger, or D-ring) where the head of a screw can secure the work. The mounting system must prevent the piece from lifting off the wall once installed. Open hooks or brackets that allow the work to be dislodged are not acceptable. Artist Responsibility: Mudflat is not responsible for the failure of specialized mounting brackets, hooks, or other hanging systems provided by the artist. Artists should ensure their chosen mounting method is adequate for the weight and configuration of their piece. Work that does not meet these specifications or is deemed unsafe for wall installation may be excluded from the exhibition. Photography: Participating artists must allow Mudflat studio and gallery visitors to photograph work that is on display for promotional and educational purposes. Images of accepted works will be used by Mudflat for promotional purposes ( Including but not limited to website publications, social media sharing, printed publications, press releases). Sales: All works must be for sale. Mudflat will use digital images of selected works to sell artwork online as well as on the premises. A 50% commission will be retained by Mudflat. Payment for sold artwork(s) will be mailed no later than 2 weeks after the show closing. Pricing: Artists should price their work fairly and consistently. Prices should reflect the true value of the piece and must be consistent with pricing for comparable work the artist has offered in other venues or sales channels. If artists prefer to ship in wooden crates, totes etc. the artist will be responsible for return shipping costs. Packing Materials: Use only clean, reusable packing materials such as bubble wrap, packing peanuts, foam, or other professional cushioning materials. Do not include personal items such as towels, blankets, pillows, or clothing as packing materials. Weight Limit: Individual packages must not exceed 45 pounds. Insurance: Standard shipping insurance will be provided in return shipping. Artists requiring additional insurance coverage beyond the standard rate are responsible for purchasing and paying for supplemental insurance. Return Shipping: Packing materials will be reused to return your work at the conclusion of the exhibition. Please pack accordingly & supply any special instructions if needed. Originality of Artwork: All work submitted must be the artist's own original creation. Artists must hold full rights to their work and any incorporated elements. Artwork found to be plagiarized or in violation of copyright will be immediately removed from the exhibition and returned to the artist. The exhibition organizers reserve the right to verify the originality of submitted work and may request documentation of the creative process if authenticity is questioned. Terms and Conditions: Accepted artwork may not be withdrawn prior to the closing dates of the exhibition. Mudflat Studio reserves the right to exclude work from the exhibition that arrives damaged, is unstable, has major flaws ( such as cracks in food surfaces etc.) or work that differs from the originally submitted entry images.   • Mudflat Faculty | Mudflat

    Meet our Faculty Aimee Archambault Aimee Achambault (she/her/hers) received her MS in Art Education from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and her BA in Visual Art and Education from Gordon College. Her sculptural work uses mixed media to explore growth, attachment and how objects carry personal and collective value. Aimee's work has been exhibited throughout the greater Boston area. She has taught art, ceramics and education in classes in community programs, public school art programs and college classes for 20 years. Noni Armony Noni Armony Erel (she/her/hers) has studied clay at Mudflat Studio and she took classes with ceramic artists in Tel Aviv, Israel. Her teaching experience includes teaching handbuilding classes to children and adults at the Jewish Community Day School in Watertown and wheelthrowing classes for adults. Noni is a Mudflat studio artist; she sells her work at Mudflat Gallery. Kyriakos Atsalis Kyriakos (Cary) Atsalis (he/him/his) received his BFA from Bates College. He sells his functional clay work at craft shows and at Mudflat Gallery. His work includes commissioned mugs for Taza Chocolate in Somerville. Cary worked as the ceramics studio manager and a teacher at Castle Hill, Truro Center for the Arts, Truro MA. Cary is a Mudflat Technical Director. Katie Bosley Sabin Katie Bosley Sabin (she/her/hers) is originally from Clearwater, Florida. She earned her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 2021 and her BFA in Ceramics from the University of Florida in 2014. Katie has been a resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana and Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and interned at Women's Studio Workshop in Rosendale, New York. She has written articles for the Journal of the National Council for Education on Ceramics Arts and Pottery Making Illustrated and has taught ceramics at community studios across the country for nearly ten years. Jennifer DeAngelis Jennifer DeAngelis (she/her/hers) received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in 2004. She crafts playful handbuilt and wheelthrown functional ware along with sculptural pieces that incorporate texture and patterns. Her work was included in the 2014 “State of Clay” exhibition. Jen is a Mudflat Technical Director. Jesse Dougherty Jessica (Jesse) Dougherty (she/her/hers) received her BFA in Studio Arts with a ceramics concentration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2021. She has completed ceramic internships at both Worcester Center for Crafts and at Mudflat. Today, Jesse teaches ceramics in the Boston area in addition to her technical work at Mudflat. Jesse's work is not defined by one process of making. Her goal is to create a sense of comfort and/or joy for both herself and others, often using animals as imagery. Gabrielle Fougere Gabrielle Fougere (she/her/hers) received her BFA in Ceramics from Massachusetts College of Art. Her claywork is handbuilt decorative boxes and one of a kind planters. She sells her work at Mudflat Gallery. Her work is included in two Lark Books: "Making and Installing Handmade Tiles" and “500 Tiles”. Gabrielle is a Mudflat Administrative Assistant. Lynn Gervens Lynn Gervens (she/her/hers) received her BFA from the University of Illinois. She has been teaching ceramics since 1977 at Mudflat, other local art centers, public school programs and preschools. Lynn is the Executive Director at Mudflat, and has also served on the boards of Studio Potter, East Somerville Main Streets, and Artisan's Asylum. Her work was included in the 2014 exhibitions “State of Clay”, "Ceramics EnMASSe", and 2015 "State of Clay: Pushing Boundaries". Leah Guerin Leah Guerin (she/her/hers) has a studio in Sutton MA, producing tiles and functional pottery. She has been a high school art teacher, receiving her Master of Art Education degree from UMass Dartmouth, as well as BFAs in ceramics and art education. Doug Hansel Doug Hansel (he/him/his) has studied ceramics at the State University of New York College at Buffalo, Worcester Center for Crafts, and Mudflat Pottery School. He has been a technical assistant for Mudflat since 1998. He enjoys making simple, wheel thrown and altered forms with porcelain. Doug sells his work locally at Artisan's Way Gallery in Concord, Five Crows Gallery in Natick, and Mudflat Gallery in Cambridge, MA. His work was included in the 2014 "State of Clay" ceramic exhibition. Felissa King Felissa King (she/her/hers) received a BFA in sculpture from Taylor University. Lisa Knebel Lisa Knebel (she/her/hers) received her BA from Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA and has also studied at Massachusetts College of Art and the Museum School. Lisa is a Mudflat studio artist; she sells her work locally at The Cleverhand Gallery in Wellesley, Hog on Ice Gallery in Newburyport and Mudflat Gallery in Cambridge. Kate Kuligowski Kate Kuligowski (she/her/hers) has a BFA in ceramics from the State University of New York at Potsdam. Kate completed the technical education program at Mudflat and is currently a member of Mudflat's office staff. Kate's work consists of highly decorated, functional, porcelain pieces that depict animals and flowers. Kate has taught classes, workshops and afterschool programs for children and adults. David LaPierre David LaPierre (he/him/his) has been working in clay for more than 25 years. He received his BFA from the University of Connecticut. His claywork is wheelthrown, using porcelain and stoneware. David works in series of multiples of the same form while manipulating the surfaces. Kylie Marden Kylie (she/her/hers) received her BFA in Ceramics from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She works as a ceramics instructor and ceramics technician in the greater Boston area. Kylie is passionate about fostering community through making, and has led multiple empty bowls events in Boston. Her work has been shown throughout New England, including the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, The Cambridge Art Association, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Kylie works as both an illustrator and potter, creating narrative and decorative surfaces on ceramic forms. Eliane Medina Eliane (she/her/hers) received her BFA in studio art from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA in 2016. From 2017-2019, she was an assistant to Deborah Schwartzkopf at Rat City Studios in Seattle, WA and taught ceramics in the Seattle area. In 2019, Eliane moved to southern Sweden, where her mother is originally from. There, she opened a community studio offering various pottery classes and events from 2020-2022. She is now living in the Boston area and teaching ceramics at Mudflat. Eliane's work consists of wheelthrown and handbuilt functional pieces, often depicting the human form and playfully highlighting everyday objects and events. Steve Murphy Steve Murphy (he/him/his) received his BFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He apprenticed to Keiichroh Sato, potter in Nagano-ken, Japan and was a student of Japanese Tea Ceremony with Allan Sosei Palmer. He has taught ceramics at the DeCordova Museum School, The Boston Center for Adult Education and the Fuller Museum of Crafts. His work was included in the 2014 “State of Clay” exhibition and the NHIA Ceramics Biennial Exhibition 2014. Julie Peck Julie Peck (she/her/hers) received her MFA from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. She served as an apprentice at Moravian Pottery and Tileworks, Doylestown, PA and was an Artist-in-residence at ARCO, Lisbon, Portugal. She shows her lowfire tiles and functional ware locally and nationally. Her work is included in two Lark books, “500 Tiles” and “500 Vases”. Tracy Raymond Tracy Raymond (she/her/hers) has studied clay at the Harvard Ceramics Studio, Rhode Island School of Design and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Her teaching experience includes wheelthrowing classes for adults, and field trips for youth groups. Corran Shrimpton Corran Shrimpton (she/her/hers) is from Syracuse, NY and received her MFA from Georgia State University and her BFA from Alfred University. She has worked at a number of ceramic studios including The Saratoga Clay Arts Center in upstate NY, the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, FL and the Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, IL. Her work explores the restriction and contortion of women’s bodies required by our beauty-obsessed culture and prompts us to consider our expectations of femininity, their origins, and their effects.   • Technical Education Program | Mudflat

    Technical Education Program A 1-year education program for hands-on ceramic technical skill building, designed for students who are interested in learning more about clays, glazes, kilns, firings, and studio maintenance. The next Tech Ed program will begin in January 2027. Applications are due: September 27, 2026 Open to intermediate to advanced level students, to be selected by application each year, based on interest, availability, and commitment. Prior ceramic technical experience is not required. Time commitment from students is 10 hours/week (spread over 3 days per week) for an entire year. Students must be available during daytime hours, typically between 10 am and 6 pm. Over the course of the year, the weekly schedule will change to accommodate learning different skills and tasks, and to match kiln firing schedules. Only 3-5 students will be selected for the year-long program. During the first semester students will be trained in all aspects of ceramic technical information. Topics include: Clays: clay body materials, clay recycling Slips and glazes: chemistry and mixing/maintaining Kilns: loading, firing, and unloading electric and gas kilns, as well as maintaining the shelves & kiln furniture Studio maintenance: cleaning, clay deliveries, etc. Following completion of the first semester, students will continue working independently as technical staff trainees through the following 2 semesters, with an added focus on training to fire our gas kilns. Gas kiln firings range in length from 8-9 hours for a bisque firing, to 11-13 hours for a glaze firing --students are expected to attend the entire firing. Applicants should be aware that there are physical demands involved in this work, including ability to lift/carry 50 lbs of clay or other materials. Tuition for the first semester is $850.00. Tuition for the second and third semesters is $600.00 each semester. Mudflat will provide additional shelf space and 24 hour access for all 3 semesters to participants. We will only consider applications for this program from people who are able to make a commitment for a full year, and who have flexible availability during daytime work hours.     Frequently Asked Questions: What are the dates for the class semesters? Mudflat has three 14-week long semesters each year, along with a short August semester. See the current semester dates here. How much do classes cost? For adult classes, tuition is $850.00 for 14 weeks unless otherwise noted. Tuition includes 25 lbs. of clay (1 bag) with glazes and firings. Students purchase additional clay from Mudflat; students may not bring in any clays or glazes from other studios or suppliers. Tuition also includes use of the studio classrooms during open lab hours - specific days and times are listed here. For children's classes & 4-week long classes, tuition is $280.00 and includes all materials. Does Mudflat sell clay and pottery tools? Yes, but only to our enrolled students. We are not a pottery supply store, but we do have clay and tools for sale for our students. Clay tools are not provided for adult classes, but may be purchased at Mudflat. A basic set of five tools costs $30.00-$45.00 – class teachers can recommend tools for your class. A big assortment of clay tools are available for sale at Mudflat. Does Mudflat offer drop-in times to work in clay? No, we do not offer this option. But we do offer one-time introductory workshops for adults (see Date Night workshops and Adult Intro workshops). If you wish to visit our facility, please call the Mudflat office at 617-628-0589. How can I purchase pottery made by Mudflat artists? Mudflat hosts two Open Studio/Sale events each year – the first weekend of May, in conjunction with Somerville Open Studios, and early December for 10 days. Typically 96 Mudflat artists participate, displaying a wide range of functional and sculptural clay work. What are the Open Lab Hours at Mudflat? Adult students in classes and independent study are encouraged to come to Mudflat for additional studio practice time during lab hours. Find the current open lab hour times here ! Open Lab Hours are included in class tuition and enrolled adult students can come to as many as they can fit into their schedule. No need to sign up in advance! What is Mudflat’s refund policy? Refund policy for all Classes, Independent Study & Affiliated: Tuition for classes is refundable minus both the service fee paid by the registrant and the processing fee paid by Mudflat if you cancel two weeks before the semester begins. No, we do not fire any outside work or rent kiln space – you must be enrolled in a Mudflat class or be a Mudflat studio artist to have work fired here. We only fire clay that has been purchased from Mudflat. Does Mudflat repair broken ceramic pieces? No, we are not able to offer this service. We recommend that you get an epoxy from your local hardware store that is specifically for repairing ceramics – follow the directions for application on the tube and work slowly. You may want to try fitting all the pieces together first without the glue. Once repaired, your piece is now decorative – we do not recommend that you use a repaired piece for functional use any more. I am a current Mudflat student. Can I bring a guest to the studio to do clay work? Yes, Mudflat has a GUEST POLICY! Current students are welcome to bring a guest (adult or child) to Mudflat during non-class/Open Lab hour time to share working in clay. Times available are: Monday, Wednesday: 1-6:30 pm Friday: 1-8 pm Saturday: 1-6 pm Sunday, 10 am -6 pm Confirm a day and time with the Mudflat office prior to visit. Guest fee is $25 per person, per visit. Fee does not include materials. Your guest should use your clay and tools, and you are responsible for your guest and any work they produce. Please be respectful of other students working in the classrooms. What is parking like at Mudflat? Being an urban clay studio, you can expect city parking when coming to Mudflat. There are metered spots up and down Broadway. Meters cost 25 cents for 12 minutes. Meters can be paid with quarters, or you can use the ParkMobile app if you have a smartphone. Mudflat is also close to the Sullivan Square T-stop and on a few bus routes if you prefer to take public transportation. Does Mudflat offer raku, pit or wood firings? While we would love to offer many alternative firing methods, we are somewhat limited in our firing options as we are located in an urban setting without access to open outdoor spaces for these types of firings.     Open Studio & Pottery Sales Mudflat's Open Studio and Sales, held every May and December, showcase the ceramic art work of our studio artists, faculty, and students. Many of our artists donate pottery and sculpture for a raffle to benefit Mudflat's Scholarship Fund - you select which pieces you'd like to win!   • Kids & Teen Classes | Mudflat

    Kids Class Options Kids Handbuilding For ages 5-8, kids learn the basics of handbuilding with clay to create a new projects each class with Mudflat instructor Eliane Medina. Thursdays, 4-6 pm Fall 2026 Kids Classes For the Fall Semester, Mudflat will be offering two 6-week session of classes. Check back early July for new class dates! Registration for the Fall kids classes will begin on July 16th at 10 am. Tuition : $280 per 6-week session All materials are included.
