    Classes at Mudflat Mudflat has offered the metropolitan Boston community a unique opportunity for clay work and play since 1971. Our mission is to promote and expand appreciation of and participation in the ceramic arts through classes, workshops, outreach programming and events for students of all ages, abilities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. For Adults View Adult Class Options For Kids & Teens View Kid & Teen Class Options Independent Study Students with previous clay experience can pursue their own projects outside of a structured class in Independent Study. This program provides access to classroom space during all Open Lab Hours throughout the semester. Students enrolled in Independent Study should attend the scheduled orientation meeting to receive studio information, clay and shelf space and to meet Mudflat staff. No instruction is provided in Independent Study. Tuition includes 1 bag of clay; additional clay must be purchased from Mudflat.     Open Studio & Pottery Sales Mudflat's Open Studio and Sales, held every May and December, showcase the ceramic art work of our studio artists, faculty, and students. These events provide an opportunity for friends, family, and the public to visit Mudflat to view an exceptional variety of functional and sculptural claywork. Many of our artists donate pottery and sculpture for a raffle to benefit Mudflat's Scholarship Fund - you select which pieces you'd like to win!     Artist of Color Summer Residency We are excited to invite applicants, at any career stage, to apply for a short term ceramic residency program at Mudflat Pottery School in Somerville, MA. This residency program will be offered during a flexible period within the summer months, with the timeframe to be determined by the resident based on their schedule and residency goals. Applicants will propose how they intend to use this residency program; options include, but are not limited to: Developing teaching experience in a workshop format Developing a solo show hosted Mudflat Dedicating time to creating a body of work Mudflat will provide support to candidates to structure the residency to further their artistic career and facilitating mentorship relationships within the area(s) of interest. Born in Miami, Florida, of Ecuadorian heritage, the city's lush, diverse vegetation left a lasting impression that continues to inform her studio practice. Her work explores Post-Traumatic Growth through the interplay of opposing forces—light and darkness, life and loss, growth and destruction—rooted in the belief that profound challenges can lead to transformation. Peña-Alvarez holds MFAs in Ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design and in Artisanry from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.   • Year-Long Residency | Mudflat

    Year-Long Residency In 1996 Mudflat began offering a one-year residency position to clay artists. This highly competitive program provides a private studio space at no cost with access to Mudflat’s facility, a monthly materials stipend, a monthly housing stipend, and opportunities to teach and sell work. Applications for the 2026-27 residency are due April 16, 2026. See below for additional information and application form. Sorry the application deadline has passed.   • Space | Mudflat

    Our Studio. The Mudflat facility is a 16,000 square foot building located on Broadway in East Somerville. We have 4 classroom areas: The Wheel 1 classroom has twenty-four electric pottery wheels, Wheel 2 has twelve electric wheels, and Handbuilding has eight canvas tables, a slabroller and two extruders. The seminar classroom is available for slide presentations, lectures and workshops. Three gas-fired kilns, five electric kilns, a soda kiln, two glaze rooms and a spray booth room are available for firing and glazing work. Students can select from four different clay bodies and over sixty slips and glazes for both high and low temperature firing methods. There is a kitchen/lounge area with an exterior balcony, and a smaller reading lounge area. Mudflat has 19 separate studio spaces for 38 ceramic artists, in private, semi-private and small group studios.

    What We Offer Want to come to Mudflat to work in clay? Check out the different options for how you can get involved here at Mudflat! Classes Mudflat offers a variety of ongoing classes for adults, kids, and teens! Adult class semesters run three times a year, each semester consisting of 14 weeks. During these semesters, classes meet once a week for 3 hours, and enrolled students have access to open lab hours for additional practice. For those seeking a shorter commitment, Mudflat also offers 4-week pottery classes that are perfect for beginners who want to explore wheel throwing without diving into a full semester. Designed specifically for those brand new to clay, these classes cover the fundamentals of throwing, trimming, and glazing functional pieces over four weekly sessions. Additionally, Mudflat offers an August semester where students can come to learn the basics of clay during a short summer semester. Kids and teen classes run from September to June annually, with classes meeting once a week for 2 hours during 6-week sessions. Classes offered are: handbuilding for younger kids ages 5-7 and wheel throwing for kids and teens ages 8-17.     Frequently Asked Questions: What are the dates for the class semesters? Mudflat has three 14-week long semesters each year, along with a short August semester. See the current semester dates here. How much do classes cost? For adult classes, tuition is $800.00 for 14 weeks unless otherwise noted. Tuition includes 25 lbs. of clay (1 bag) with glazes and firings. Students purchase additional clay from Mudflat; students may not bring in any clays or glazes from other studios or suppliers. Tuition also includes use of the studio classrooms during open lab hours - specific days and times are listed here. For children's classes, tuition is $225.00 for 6 weeks and includes all materials. Does Mudflat sell clay and pottery tools? Yes, but only to our enrolled students. We are not a pottery supply store, but we do have clay and tools for sale for our students. Clay tools are not provided for adult classes, but may be purchased at Mudflat. A basic set of five tools costs $30.00-$45.00 – class teachers can recommend tools for your class. A big assortment of clay tools are available for sale at Mudflat. Does Mudflat offer drop-in times to work in clay? No, we do not offer this option. But we do offer one-time introductory workshops for adults (see Date Night workshops and Adult Intro workshops). How do I register for a class or workshop? If you wish to visit our facility, please call the Mudflat office at 617-628-0589. How can I purchase pottery made by Mudflat artists? Mudflat hosts two Open Studio/Sale events each year – the first weekend of May, in conjunction with Somerville Open Studios, and early December for 10 days. Typically 96 Mudflat artists participate, displaying a wide range of functional and sculptural clay work. Pottery can also be purchased at Mudflat Gallery, our year-round showcase of claywork by 40 Mudflat artists, faculty and students at the Porter Square Shopping Center, in Cambridge. What are the Open Lab Hours at Mudflat? Adult students in classes and independent study are encouraged to come to Mudflat for additional studio practice time during lab hours. Find the current open lab hour times here ! Open Lab Hours are included in class tuition and enrolled adult students can come to as many as they can fit into their schedule. No need to sign up in advance! What is Mudflat’s refund policy? Refund policy for all Classes, Independent Study & Affiliated: Tuition for classes is refundable minus both the service fee paid by the registrant and the processing fee paid by Mudflat if you cancel two weeks before the semester begins. If you cancel your class after that date, tuition is non-refundable. Credits or transfers will not be issued for missed classes. Refund policy for Kid/Teen classes: Tuition for classes is refundable minus both the service fee paid by the registrant and the processing fee paid by Mudflat if you cancel two weeks before the session begins. If you cancel your class after that date, tuition is non-refundable. Refund policy for Workshops: Tuition for workshops is refundable minus both the service fee paid by the registrant and the processing fee paid by Mudflat if you cancel two weeks before the workshop date. If you cancel your workshop after that date, tuition may be non-refundable. Credits, refunds or transfers will not be issued for missed dates. Can I fire pottery in your kilns? No, we do not fire any outside work or rent kiln space – you must be enrolled in a Mudflat class or be a Mudflat studio artist to have work fired here. We only fire clay that has been purchased from Mudflat. Does Mudflat repair broken ceramic pieces? No, we are not able to offer this service. We recommend that you get an epoxy from your local hardware store that is specifically for repairing ceramics – follow the directions for application on the tube and work slowly. You may want to try fitting all the pieces together first without the glue. Once repaired, your piece is now decorative – we do not recommend that you use a repaired piece for functional use any more. I am a current Mudflat student. Can I bring a guest to the studio to do clay work? Yes, Mudflat has a GUEST POLICY! Current students are welcome to bring a guest (adult or child) to Mudflat during non-class/Open Lab hour time to share working in clay. Times available are: Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 1-6:30 pm Saturday: 1-6 pm Sunday, 10 am -6 pm Confirm a day and time with the Mudflat office prior to visit. Guest fee is $25 per person, per visit. Fee does not include materials. Your guest should use your clay and tools, and you are responsible for your guest and any work they produce. Please be respectful of other students working in the classrooms. What is parking like at Mudflat? Being an urban clay studio, you can expect city parking when coming to Mudflat. There are metered spots up and down Broadway. Meters cost 25 cents for 12 minutes. Meters can be paid with quarters, or you can use the ParkMobile app if you have a smartphone. Mudflat is also close to the Sullivan Square T-stop and on a few bus routes if you prefer to take public transportation. Does Mudflat offer raku, pit or wood firings? While we would love to offer many alternative firing methods, we are somewhat limited in our firing options as we are located in an urban setting without access to open outdoor spaces for these types of firings.     Call for Entries The Mudflat Cup Show!: National Call for Entry Artists are invited to submit functional cups & mugs to the 3rd annual Mudflat Cup Show! Juried by: Chandra DeBuse Exhibition Dates: March 13- April 19, 2026 Exhibition Location: Mudflat Studio, Somerville MA Submission Deadline: February 5, 2026 The submission deadline has passed. Please check back for more opportunities! ELIGIBILITY: Artists over 18 residing in the US or Canada Work(s) must be completed within the last 3 years Only original works will be accepted. Accepted works must be the same as the work that is sent. No substitutions will be accepted. Work must be functional. Cup prices should not exceed $180, and should be priced individually and not as a set. Work must be ready to be installed upon delivery if accepted. APPLY: Artists may submit up to 4 entries with 1 image per entry. FEES In order to make applying to this show more accessible and remove barriers for artists, there is no entry fee to apply ENTRY PROCEDURES Fill out the application form, Each image should be at least 200 dpi and a minimum of 1200px on the small dimension Images should be sent as JPEGs or PNGs Please label each piece with lastname_first inital_entry# (example: 1 entry with a detail shot would be Smith_J_1a.jpeg : Smith_J_1b.jpeg) Incomplete applications will not be considered PHOTOGRAPHY Participating artists must allow Mudflat studio and gallery visitors to photograph work that is on display for promotional and educational purposes. Mudflat will use digital images of selected works to sell artwork online as well as on the premises. A 50% commission will be retained by Mudflat. Payment for sold artwork(s) will be mailed no later than 2 weeks after the show closing. SHIPPING Artists are responsible for shipping or delivery of accepted work(s) to Mudflat and are responsible for ensuring that the work(s) is packed in a safe manner to travel to and from Mudflat. Please see below for shipping guidelines. Mudflat is not responsible for pieces broken or lost in transit. No substitutions will be accepted. Mudflat will pay for return shipping if the work(s) is unsold . Any work that is hand-delivered must be picked up. Any work left at Mudflat 90 days past the closing date of the exhibition will be considered in-kind donations to Mudflat Studio. All work(s) must be received by the shipping deadline, or they may be excluded from the show. If artists prefer to ship in wooden crates, totes etc. the artist will be responsible for return shipping costs. Packing Materials: Use only clean, reusable packing materials such as bubble wrap, packing peanuts, foam, or other professional cushioning materials. Do not include personal items such as towels, blankets, pillows, or clothing as packing materials. Weight Limit: Individual packages must not exceed 45 pounds. Insurance: Standard shipping insurance will be provided. Artists requiring additional insurance coverage beyond the standard rate are responsible for purchasing and paying for supplemental insurance. Return Shipping: All packing materials will be reused to return your work at the conclusion of the exhibition. Please pack accordingly & supply any special instructions if needed. TERMS & CONDITIONS Accepted artwork may not be withdrawn prior to the closing dates of the exhibition. Mudflat Studio reserves the right to exclude work from the exhibition that arrives damaged, is unstable, has major flaws (such as cracks in food surfaces etc.) or work that differs from the originally submitted entry images. Mudflat is a nonprofit, 501(C)3 organization. Mudflat is funded in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, and the Somerville Arts Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. We also receive support from foundations, corporations, and individuals.
