Friends of Mudflat Perks Subscription (Formerly called Membership) Enrolled students who take classes every semester and/or sign up for workshops, might be interested in purchasing a Mudflat Perks Subscription at the time of registration. The Mudflat Perks Subscription provides the following benefits: 10% discount on class tuition and intro workshops Special member discount (up to 50%) on other workshops Early registration for classes and workshops* 10% discount on purchases at Mudflat Open Studio and Sale events in May and December 10% discount on purchases at Mudflat Gallery in Porter Square, Cambridge The Mudflat Perks Subscription provides the discounts listed above but does not include studio access - you must be enrolled in a class to use the Mudflat facility. TO PURCHASE A SUBSCRIPTION: When taking new subscribers, Perks Subscriptions can only be purchased during registration periods. Registration periods begin on the first day of general registration and last for 3 weeks. We do not take Perks Subscription purchases outside of a registration period. A one year Perk Subscription is $200, and your discount can be applied immediately if registering for a class or workshop. You are not required to become a Subscriber to take classes at Mudflat. TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES: In order to register, you must create a mudflat.org online account. You can find the tutorials for creating an account and registering on our registration page . RENEWAL: When your Perks Subscription is due for renewal, you will receive an invoice from Mudflat via email, rather than renew when signing up for your class or workshop. When your renewal date is approaching, invoices will be sent out at the beginning of the registration period (referenced above) and be valid for 3 weeks. If you would like to renew your Mudflat Perk Subscription, pay the invoice by the listed due date. If you do not want to renew, do not pay the invoice. Please note: Perks subscriptions do not auto-renew. Not paying the issued invoice by the due date will result in the cancellation of your Mudflat Perks Subscription. CONDITIONS: Please note there is no early registration for the August semester of classes. Subscriptions are non-transferrable. One subscription per person. This workshop includes an orientation meeting that will discuss clay bodies, best forms to make, application of flashing slips, texture considerations, glaze choice and glazing tips, plus what happens in a soda kiln during the firing. Mudflat’s tech staff will wad, load, fire and unload the kiln. Limited to 10 people for each section. Students are eligible to enroll in one Soda workshop per semester but can add themselves to the waitlist for the other workshop should more space become available. Skill level: Not recommended for beginning students. Students will learn how to utilize slabs and coils and demonstrations will cover proportions, skeletal structures, muscle mass, and the planes of the body and head. A short hands-on exercise will be included during the workshop. Learn more about Gwendolyn and see her work at: www.gwendolynlanier.com Saturday, January 17, 10 am - 4 pm Tuition: $250, Subscribers $125 Kintsugi with Sayako Hiroi Experience the art and philosophy of Kintsugi repair through both traditional urushi and modern techniques. This 3-hour workshop offers an introduction to both the traditional and simplified methods of ceramic repair. Participants will have the rare opportunity to experience working with genuine urushi (natural lacquer) and also learn a modern simplified method suitable for beginners. The simplified process allows participants to complete a repair within one session and is easy to handle even for first-time learners. However, please note that the simplified version is not food-safe and should be used for decorative purposes only. Participants are welcome to bring their own simple broken pieces to repair, provided that the pieces are approved by the instructor in advance. Please note: The workshop uses natural urushi lacquer, which can cause allergic skin reactions in some individuals. All participants will be required to read and sign a Waiver Form prior to the workshop. Introductory Workshop Come try your hand at working with clay! These introductory workshops are a great way to see if you like this material. Designed for first-timers, with hands-on instruction. Finished work will be ready for pick-up about one month after the workshop. Choose from Adult Wheelthrowing Intro or Friday Night Wheel: WHEELTHROWING INTRO WORKSHOP Come try your hand at working with clay on the potter's wheel. Mudflat teacher Lisa Knebel will show you how to use the potter's wheel to make your own pots. Each student will save one pot that they make and it will be glazed and fired. This is a great way to see if you like this approach to working with clay. Each workshop meets Sundays, 1-3 pm Tuition: $75 per person FRIDAY NIGHT WHEEL Have a fun Friday night in East Somerville by trying your hands at working with clay on the potter's wheel. Mudflat teacher Jesse Dougherty will show you how to use the potter's wheel and introduce you to making your own pots. Makes a great date night! Each student will save one pot that they make and it will be glazed and fired for pick-up at a later date. 4-Week Semester Adult Intro to Wheelthrowing Class Options Mudflat is excited to offer this NEW class option, Intro to Wheelthrowing 4-week class! Overview Our 4-week pottery classes are the perfect introduction to working on the wheel. Perfect for beginners who want to explore pottery without a long-term commitment, this short semester is designed specifically for those brand new to clay and pottery. Over four weekly classes, you'll learn the fundamentals of using the potter's wheel to throw and trim functional pieces, plus finishing techniques including glazing. Students can expect to make between 5-6 pieces each. This course covers all the basics you need to create your first ceramic pieces. Classes meet once per week for four weeks, with no additional lab time included. Please note this class is limited to students who are completely new to clay and first-time students at Mudflat. What You'll Learn Class 1: Introduction to throwing on the wheel Class 2: Throwing practice and skill development Class 3: Trimming your pieces Class 4: Glazing and finishing What's Included All tools and materials are provided with your enrollment. No prior experience necessary No additional lab time is included. What to Bring Just yourself! We recommend wearing clothes and shoes you don't mind getting messy. If you would like to bring a towel or apron, thats great! Important Information Attendance Policy: Since each class builds on the previous one, attendance at all four sessions is required to complete the program. Makeup classes/time outside of class are not available. If a student misses class 3 or 4 ( trimming/glazing) the instructor will trim or glaze the student's work in their absence. Enrolled students will have access to studio hours throughout the semester and will receive a complimentary 25 lb bag of clay. While personal clay tools are not included, they can be bought at Mudflat. Independent Study: Students who have prior experience working with clay have the opportunity to work on their own projects independently through the Independent Study program. Independent Study allows students to use the classroom space during open lab hours throughout the semester. Participants who are new to the studio should plan to attend an orientation meeting to receive studio details, clay and shelf space. This orientation happens on the first day of the semester at 6:30 pm. Please note that Independent Study does not include any instruction. Additionally, students enrolled in independent study will receive a complementary 25 lb bag of clay. Personal clay tools are not provided but can be purchased at Mudflat. Enrolled students might be interested in this Independent Study Cheat Sheet Affiliated: This program is designed for Mudflat students who were previously enrolled and have a home studio available for their work. It allows you to create pieces at home and then bring them to Mudflat for firing in our kilns by our technical team. Affiliated students are required to buy clay from Mudflat. The price of clay covers the cost of glazes, bisque and glaze firings. One bag of clay is included in the tuition fee. You are welcome to use the glaze rooms at Mudflat during our Open Lab Hours. Your work will be fired alongside other Mudflat student pieces during scheduled firings. Please note that being affiliated does not grant you a student shelf in the Mudflat classrooms, and no instructional support is provided. Mondays, 6:30-9:30 pm with Corran Shrimpton Class Description: This class explores botanical and animal forms through ceramic sculpture. Drawing inspiration from the natural world — whether humans, insects, flowers or imagined hybrid creatures — students will learn to translate organic shapes into expressive clay forms. Students will learn a range of hand building techniques—pinching, coiling, slab construction, and sculpting solid—as well as surface approaches like carving, texture, slips, and underglazes. Approaches will range from observational realism to expressive abstraction and fragmentation. Students who are interested in creating vessels are also welcome and will be encouraged to explore the sculptural possibilities within a functional frame. CLASS INFORMATION: Tuition For adult classes & independent study tuition is $800.00 for 14 weeks unless otherwise noted. Affiliated tuition is $700 Tuition includes 25 lbs. of clay (there is a $10 surcharge for porcelain) with glazes and firings, but does not include personal clay tools, please see below. Students may purchase additional clay from Mudflat; students may not bring in any clays or glazes from other studios or suppliers. Tuition also includes use of the studio classrooms during open lab hours. Mudflat does offer financial aid. Clay Tools Personal clay tools are not provided for adult classes, but may be purchased at Mudflat. A basic set of five tools costs betwen $22-40, cass depending. An assortment of clay tools are available for sale at Mudflat. These can be purchased the first day of class. Refund Policy Refund policy for all classes, independent study & affiliated: Tuition for classes is refundable minus the service & processing fees if you cancel two weeks before the semester begins . If you cancel your class after that date, tuition is non-refundable. Credits or transfers will not be issued for missed classes. Makeup class policy for the 14-week long semester classes Instructor-Initiated Cancellations: When an instructor must cancel a class or when Mudflat closes due to inclement weather, a formal makeup class will be scheduled for all enrolled students. Student-Initiated Absences: If a student misses a class for personal reasons, there are no formal makeup classes, class transfers, or refunds provided. Students who must miss a session are encouraged to: Notify their instructor in advance when possible Practice missed skills during designated open lab hours Pottery Pickup Storage Period: Completed pottery for classes and workshops will be held at Mudflat for up to 2 months from the completion date. After this period, unclaimed pieces may be disposed of to make room for new student work. Student Responsibility: Students are responsible for picking up their finished pieces within the 2-month window. Please don't forget to collect your creations! We love seeing the wonderful pieces you've made and want to ensure they make it home with you. Fall 2025 Adult students in classes and independent study are encouraged to come to Mudflat for additional studio practice time during open lab hours. Students are permitted to use all classrooms with the exception of the community classroom, which is not available for lab hour use. See below for the lab hours and classroom schedules. * Please note that open lab hours are for registered students only.
