Mudflat Faculty

Kyriakos (Cary) Atsalis received his BFA from Bates College. He sells his functional clay work at craft shows and at Mudflat Gallery. His work includes commissioned mugs for Taza Chocolate in Somerville. Cary worked as the ceramics studio manager and a teacher at Castle Hill, Truro Center for the Arts, Truro MA. Cary is Mudflat’s Technical Director.

Susan Bernstein is a Mudflat studio artist since 2005. Her handbuilt work can be seen at Mudflat Gallery. Her work was included in the Lark book, 500 Vases and in the 2012 State of Clay exhibition.

Jennifer DeAngelis received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in 2004. She crafts handbuilt sculptures and wall pieces incorporating textures, geometry and multiples of forms. She is a member of Mudflat's technical support staff.

Eileen deRosas has a BFA in Sculpture from Parsons School of Design, and started pottery in New York City at Supermud Pottery and Greenwich House Pottery. She teaches ceramics at the New Art Center in Newton and at the Arlington Center for the Arts. Eileen makes functional earthenware in the maiolica style—she loves the marriage of form and decoration that maiolica provides.

Gabrielle Fougere received her BFA in Ceramics from Massachusetts College of Art. Her claywork is handbuilt decorative boxes and one of a kind planters. She sells her work at Mudflat Gallery. Her work is included in two Lark Books: Making and Installing Handmade Tiles and 500 Tiles. Gabrielle is Mudflat's Administrative Assistant.

Wayne Fuerst is a potter and papermaker. He studied at the University of Green Bay and at the University of Southern Maine and apprenticed with potter Tom Krueger. He has also taught at the Worcester Craft Center, the Boston Center for Adult Education, and the Fuller Craft Museum and currently at the Harvard Ceramics Program.

Howard Gerstein received his BFA from the University of Cincinnati and has been working in clay since 1985, with a studio at Mudflat. He currently teaches ceramics at the Danforth Museum School and Boston University. Howard’s work is included in two Lark Books, 500 Animals in Clay and 500 Vases, and his work was included in the 2012 State of Clay exhibition.

Lynn Gervens received her BFA from the University of Illinois. She has been teaching ceramics since 1977 at Mudflat, other local art centers, public school programs and preschools. Lynn is the Executive Director at Mudflat, and also serves on the boards of Studio Potter and East Somerville Main Streets.

Leah Guerin has a studio in Sutton MA, producing tiles and functional pottery. She has been a high school art teacher, receiving her Master of Art Education degree from UMass Dartmouth, as well as BFAs in ceramics and art education. www.leahguerin.com

Arthur Halvorsen is a graduate of Maine College of Art where he received his BFA in ceramics. Arthur's work is handbuilt functional earthenware using bisque molds, slip, stamps, sprig molds and colorful, runny glazes. His work can be seen at Mudflat Gallery, and at www.arthurhalvorsen.com. He was featured in the November/December 2010 issue of Pottery Making Illustrated and included in the 2012 State of Clay exhibition.

Anne Hodgsdon received her MFA from Boston University. She has her teaching certificate and has taught high school art. Her own claywork is functional porcelain with sculptural elements. She studied with ceramic artist Tony Marsh at a workshop at Haystack. Anne is a Mudflat Gallery staff member. Her work was included in the Lark book, 500 Vases and in the juried State of Clay exhibition.

Lisa Knebel received her BA from Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA and has also studied at Massachusetts College of Art and the Museum School. Lisa is a Mudflat studio artist; she sells her work locally at The Cleverhand Gallery in Wellesley, Hog on Ice Gallery in Newburyport and Mudflat Gallery in Cambridge.

David LaPierre has been working in clay for more than 25 years. He received his BFA from the University of Connecticut. His claywork is wheelthrown, using porcelain and stoneware. David works in series of multiples of the same form while manipulating the surfaces.

Dan Molyneux came to ceramics through his pursuit of a PhD in Literature and Anthropology. He has had numerous apprenticeships in Bangalore, India; Zhejiang University, China; Vallauris, France; Cub Creek Foundation, Virginia, and Gustin Ceramics, Massachusetts. Steve Murphy received his BFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He apprenticed to Keiichroh Sato, potter in Nagano-ken, Japan and was a student of Japanese Tea Ceremony with Allan Sosei Palmer. He has taught ceramics at the DeCordova Museum School, The Boston Center for Adult Education and the Fuller Museum of Crafts. www.bostonpottery.com

Julie Peck received her MFA from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. She served as an apprentice at Moravian Pottery and Tileworks, Doylestown, PA and was an Artist-in-residence at ARCO, Lisbon, Portugal. She shows her lowfire tiles and functional ware locally and nationally. Her work is included in two Lark books, 500 Tiles and 500 Vases.

Tracy Raymond has studied clay at the Harvard Ceramics Studio, Rhode Island School of Design and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. She is a member of Mudflat's technical support staff.

Sholeh Regna works in many different arts mediums (jewelry, video, monotype), but considers herself primarily a sculptor. She has taught classes and workshops at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, the New Art Center and Harvard University. She has exhibited her artwork extensively since 1994, and has received awards in sculpture and video.

Monica Ripley received her MFA from the University of Nebraska. She was Mudflat's Artist-in-Residence for 2003-04. Monica's wheelthrown porcelain is influenced by historic European ceramics and silver, and by her interest in Chinese ceramics. Monica is a recipient of a 2004 Somerville Arts Council Artist Fellowship grant. Her work was included in the Lark book, 500 Vases and in the 2012 State of Clay exhibition.

Elizabeth Rodriguez studied painting and graphic design before she started working in clay in 1994. She currently maintains her own ceramic studio in Lowell and exhibits her functional work throughout Massachusetts at galleries and craft shows.She has taught at Palomita Pottery in Newton Centre, at North Shore Clay Studio in Lynn, and at Clay Dreaming in Beverly.

Moriah Tumbleson-Shaw received her BA at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where she was first introduced to clay. Her work can be found on-line, as well as at Mudflat Gallery and other local galleries.
