Visiting Artist Workshop: Steve Murphy
Pottery for the Japanese Tea Ceremony

Steve Murphy Tea BowlBoston potter Steve Murphy will teach a workshop on making pottery for Japanese tea ceremony, including chawan (tea bowls), mizusashi (covered water jars), and hanaire (flower vases). Students will learn Japanese style wheel-throwing techniques to create these pieces, as well as handbuilt versions of these forms. Steve will also demonstrate trimming with wooden tools, and hakeme brush-applied slip design.

Steve received his BFA in Design from the University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth and learned pottery as an apprentice to Keiichroh Sato in Nagano, Japan. He also studied Japanese tea ceremony with Allan Palmer. His ceramic work can be seen on his website, www.bostonpottery.com.
